Oral History interviews by Fiona Rothchilds

LISTENING TO ONLINE ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEWS IS A HEALTHY APPROACH TO LEARNING ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE’S LIVES.

Oral history interviewing is a worthwhile activity to undertake because it assists someone to share their life story with the world.

For some being interviewed, it’s the first time they’ve shared information about themselves with family, friends, colleagues or associates about their life lived.

The audio recordings provide the interviewee with an opportunity to review, reminisce, and celebrate their life and achievements.

On this page is a list of 11 oral history interviews which I conducted between 2014 and 2015 for the National Library of Australia (NLA) in conjunction with Geoscience Australia.

The interviews were undertaken as part of the History of Australian geoscience oral history project 2014-2020. They are audio [spoken word] interviews which are online via the NLA’s website catalogue. They may be downloaded and listened to for free.

The average length of interview is about five (5) hours. In addition, on the NLA’s website, some interviews have a brief text-based synopsis outlining the interview’s content.

If the interview is listed but does not have the audio or text-based synopsis available to access it could be because certain rights outlined by the interviewee are being respected.

For example, several interviewees might have signed non-release forms which means that their interviews can only be accessed with written permission from the interviewee.

Some interviewees might only want their oral history interviews to be listened to after their death. Others might have asked that their interview be reserved until further notice.

The NLA’s Oral History Section is the contact point for information on those particular oral history interviews.

Here is the list of eleven interviews undertaken and completed by me as part of the History of Australian geoscience oral history project recordings 2014-onwards.
