Vinnies raises funds for the needy in Canberra on 22 June 2017

I’m one of the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) volunteering to ‘sleepout’ to raise funds as part of the VINNIES CEO Sleepout event.

Vinnies is the short form of the name St Vincent de Paul Society. Vinnies is a charity which raises funds to help the needy.

The Vinnies CEO Sleepout event in its infancy in Canberra. The event in Canberra is less than 10 years old.  The promotional material has just been issued: including the Desk-Printout and the A3-Poster-Rethink-Relate-Respond-1.

Volunteers like me raise funds via the Vinnies’ weblink to help the St Vincent de Paul Society with its charity work. I’m not associated with the Society in any way. But it’s charitable work that, in my view, I’m happy to do now and then…so I am…

What would you give to stay warm?

What would you give to sleep warm in winter: ice-cream, money or time?  Some donate money because they then have a tax receipt to show the Australian Tax Office as a deduction against income earned.

I had never faced a particularly tough winter like 2016 – with a structure caving in on me due to weathering. Happily “all is well” now.

My warm blanket

However, as a result of a week’s sleepless nights last year, I understand the importance of a good night’s sleep. I’m grateful for the air-conditioning, gas heater, electric lights, hot water, mohair knee rug, and lockable doors I have at home. I was relieved to have eight hours peaceful sleep after the ‘plumber’ attended and within four hours had fixed the problem.

To show my thanks for the collaboration I received last year to ‘fix the plumbing’, I’m now ‘doing my bit’. I’m raising funds for the Vinnies CEO Sleepout event on 22 June 2017 in Canberra.  Will you donate?

I do believe that giving back is part of giving thanks. I received immediate advice and assistance for my own matter for which I am grateful.

In my life, it follows that I give to others in return in my own way. I’ve never done this type of volunteering before but then life is full of surprises. I will be sleeping like a bat hanging from the rafters in a gymnasium somewhere in Canberra on 22 June 2017.

Luxury in a private hospital in Canberra

The nurses do a turn-down service before supper in private hospitals.

Vinnies’ marketing gurus tell me that between 100 and 150 CEOs will be sleeping out together that night in Canberra.  It probably won’t be as comfortable as sleeping in a hospital bed…in a private hospital.

At the Vinnies CEO Sleepout 2017 in Canberra there will be security guards present. I think the snorers will be in one corner of the gym. The insomniacs will be near me and a large bear with a sore thumb will be stationed at the end of my sleeping bag. A part from that, it should be a quiet night in … and all for a good cause.  I hope to raise the full $2,000 needed.

As it’s Week One, the best way to help me reach the $2,000 AUD target by 22 June 2017 is to search for Dr Fiona under ‘CEO’ at:  The online-donation system accepts any form of currency…

  1. Click on ‘CEO’.
  2. Under NAME, key in the words: Dr Fiona
  3. Note the photo of two ice-creams as shown in the image above.
  4. Click on ‘Donate Now’.
  5. Follow the prompts to key in your individual or organization details – or anonymously if you wish.
  6. Make sure the State of ‘ACT’ is selected.
  7. Select the amount you’d like to donate to Dr Fiona’s fundraising efforts (i.e. $10 is welcome…).
  8. Please note a tax invoice will be emailed to you from the Vinnies’ website as part of your donation.
  9. Also, unless it is an anonymous donation, I will receive notification of your donation via the Vinnies’ web link. This will be a happy surprise for me…and one which will be appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
