Design Canberra festival remembers Robert Foster

Designers and artisans gathered on-22-October-2016 for the opening of “Luminary: Remembering Robert Foster” exhibition set in the ActewAGL foyer’s Ossolites display. Ossolite is one of the signature designs of the late Robert Foster.

Robert Foster and Fink Designs

Fink Designs found on display at ‘Peters of Kensington’, Sydney, NSW.

The artist’s legacy of FINK + Co Design was seen to light up the month-long festival to encourage contributions and participation from the Australian and international art world.

After a two-year practice run, this year DESIGN Canberra celebrated the best works of arts and crafts designers in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) supported by CraftACT. The four week display (27 October-25 November 2016) showcased commercial art and design as well as designs of private homes and gardens.

As an initiative to promote interior decorating, landscape design and architectural design, DESIGN Canberra invited Canberrans to open up their private homes to the public. Young creators were encouraged to create ‘pop-up’ shops in their art spaces in the Central Business District area such as within the Nishi Building in Acton, and the Lonsdale Street space in Braddon. Leading designers were encouraged to open up their studios for the public to view their creative spaces. This viewing concept is also popular throughout the year for Friends of the National Gallery of Australia.

Robert-foster would have smiled at his title of luminary. FINK + Co designs are shown in a range of promotional literature including fink-tablewarefink-domestic-ware, fink-jewellery and in the fink-jewellery-brochure. His long shadow of contemporary design and colour was evident throughout the festival.

Robert Foster was an Arts graduate of the Australian National University who valued his alumni status. He returned to the university in the 1990s to teach and mentor aspiring designers.

In addition to Foster’s legacy exhibition this year with Design Canberra, the National Portrait Gallery held a designer market on 18-20 November within its precinct.  For a second year running the Australian Institute of Architects arranged bus tours of outstanding houses with gardens in the ACT.  Next year’s Design Canberra festival is expected to be just as good.
